It’s fascinating to note that this is just the latest chapter in a long and storied history of orchid connoisseurship, which began when the rare plants became must-have status symbols among the elite of the mid-1800s. So obsessed were the rich with this flower that their condition was diagnosed as “orchidelerium.”
